District Information

Hempfield Area School District is the largest District in Westmoreland County The District has a resident population of over 49,000 people and covers approximately ninety-five square miles. The District is located thirty miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The school district, comprised of Hempfield Township and the boroughs of Adamsburg, Hunker, Manor, New Stanton and Youngwood, surround the city of Greensburg.

 

COMMUNITY

The community, which has been changing at an increasingly accelerated rate from predominantly rural to residential, industrial, and commercial, offers many educational, cultural, medical, recreational, business, and civic advantages.  Five college campuses, Seton Hill UniversitySt. Vincent College, the Greensburg campus of the University of Pittsburgh, the Greensburg campus of Carlow University and Westmoreland County Community College are located within the township or close by, enabling commuting. The Westmoreland County Museum of Art, Greensburg Art Center and the Westmoreland County Symphony are housed in nearby Greensburg. Health care is provided by Independent Health Care Systems.  Westmoreland Mall, many nearby shopping plazas, and downtown Greensburg offer residents over 250 stores in which to shop. Lynch Field and Youngwood Park and Pool provide the community with outdoor swimming during the summer. The nearby Laurel Highlands offers a variety of winter and summer resort activities and facilities.

SCHOOL SYSTEM & ACADEMICS

The school system includes five elementary buildings (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), one grade 9 school,and a senior high school (10-12).The Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center serves Hempfield students in grades 10-12.

The Hempfield Area School District offers a comprehensive program providing college preparatory, business, general, and vocational technical courses to approximately 5,350 students in grades K-12. The largest percentage of students are enrolled in the college preparatory program. Students in the district score above state and national levels on all standardized achievement tests. Approximately 66% of the juniors and seniors take the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Our students consistently score higher on the SAT than other Pennsylvania students. Nearly 70% of Hempfield graduates attend four-year Baccalaureate degree programs. The high school is fully accredited by the Middle States Association.  Students participate in a variety of district, regional, state, and national academic, vocational, artistic, and athletic competitions, winning numerous awards and championships annually.

The Hempfield Area School District has a total of 604 employees.  The professional staff totals 418 administrators and teachers.
