  VISION FOR HARROLD MIDDLE SCHOOL

We envision Harrold as a learning community where everyone acts as responsible, contributing citizens.  We are committed to providing an array of educational, social, and extra-curricular experiences.

  ABOUT HARROLD MIDDLE SCHOOL / HEMPFIELD AREA

Welcome to Harrold Middle School!  Harrold Middle School is one of three middle schools in the Hempfield Area School District (Harrold, Wendover, and West Hempfield); the building is adjacent to the Hempfield Area Senior High School on Route 130 in Greensburg, PA.

The Hempfield Area School District, which is the largest in Westmoreland County with a resident population of over 49,000, covers approximately ninety-five square miles and lies thirty miles southeast of Pittsburgh.  The school district, comprised of Hempfield Township and the boroughs of Adamsburg, Hunker, Manor, New Stanton and Youngwood, surrounds the city of Greensburg.

The Hempfield Area School District offers a comprehensive program providing college preparatory, business, general, and vocational technical courses to approximately 7200 students in grades K-12. The largest percentage of students is enrolled in the college preparatory program. Special curriculum offerings include: Advanced Placement - Courses are offered in eight subjects. Approximately 5% of students take these courses which follow the Advanced Placement curriculum. The AP courses include: English, American History, Calculus, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, French V, and Spanish V. Honors - A rigorous course; demands a high level of analytical reading ability and challenges at a very high level of cognitive thinking. Honors courses are the highest level of academic courses and lead to Advanced Placement work.

The academic calendar includes thirty six-day cycles. One credit is based on 120 clock hours of planned work in the classroom. Subjects earn one credit if they meet six periods (42 minutes each) a cycle per academic year. One-half credit subjects meet six periods a cycle for a semester or three periods per cycle per academic year. One-quarter credit subjects meet twelve periods each cycle. Exceptions are laboratory science classes that receive one credit for the academic year but meet more than six periods per cycle. Grading System and Credits: Twenty-two credits are required for graduation from Hempfield Area High School. Grades in each subject are based on percentages.

A = 93 - 100
B = 86 - 92
C = 78 - 85
D = 70 - 77
F = 0 - 69

Seventh and eighth grade students of the Hempfield Area School District may participate in the following eleven interscholastic sports:  boys’ football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, co-ed cross country, co-ed swimming, cheerleading, wrestling, girls’ volleyball, and co-ed track and field.

All students participating in the sports program sanctioned by our school system must maintain their academic grades and conduct themselves in an exemplary fashion.  Participation in a team sports helps students develop motor, teamwork, and communication skills, improve their work ethic, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and provide a release from academic stressors.  School sports also boost morale of the entire school.  This increased interest in school generally results in increased enjoyment in academics.

Middle school sport programs in the Hempfield Area School District do not include participation by sixth graders.  It is the philosophy of the school district that the sixth graders be afforded the opportunity to concentrate on the academic and social transitions between elementary and secondary levels prior to joining an interscholastic athletic team.  However, they may participate in intramurals.

Students participate in a variety of district, regional, state, and national academic, vocational, artistic, and athletic competitions, winning numerous awards and championships annually. Approximately 8-12 sophomores or juniors attend the summer Governor's Schools in the Arts, Sciences, International Studies, Agriculture, Education, and Business.
